Sequenced synthesizers and drum machines aren’t the usual way to record a 12-bar
blues. Nevertheless, that’s how I expedited my way through a 2020
songwriting challenge
that asked participants to write and record ten songs in one month. I still didn’t
make it to ten, but this was one of the tunes I wrote for it that I really liked.
I wanted to rerecord it, not only because I wanted to hear it with more traditional instrumentation,
but also because other musicians add so much. Having limited my involvement to just vocals and
bass guitar, I present the now-official version. (Down below, you can listen to the synth-based demo
version as well.)

Lyrics
How do you ignore the drumbeat inside your soul?
How do you ignore the drumbeat inside your soul?
Are you making excuses when you hear the church bell toll?
You got yourself someone to hate your enemies for you.
Yeah you found yourself someone to hate your enemies for you.
It ain’t right that way either. Now you got some penance to do.
How do you ignore the drumbeat inside your soul?
When they’re giving you a false god, one you know you shouldn’t extol?
Are you making excuses? Have you faithfully played your role?
You let the devil in the back door once you smelled his sweet perfume.
You let the devil in the back door once you smelled his sweet perfume.
Now he’s lying in your bed when you didn’t even want him in your living room.
