Why Do You Do (The Things You Do)

Imagine that the sound of your voice became thin if your soul fell into decay. Simple studio trickery can produce this effect. I used it once in an ultra-dark song that I recorded years ago. The technique seemed apropos here also; but this time the thin-voiced person contrasts with another.

Lyrics

You were sharp and steely and I felt punch drunk next to you.
I had danced away another year with your last nerve askew.
You must have tired of exhuming me;
of gathering all of my debris.
You asked me...
Why do you do the things you do to yourself?
Your pointed questions pierce me. They’ve nearly dulled my final spark.
But I still have something in me to produce a smart remark:
Living up to someone as elevated as you;
it's impossible, impossible, impossible for an unrepentant lazy ass to do.
You repeated...
Why do you do the things you do to yourself?
Desensitized and listless, I have little to reveal.
But you are sharp and steely and made sure that I would feel
a rocky bottom face plant with no excuse left to be made.
So thank you for the message successfully conveyed,
when you asked me...
Why do you do (why do you do) the things you do to yourself?
What do you want more than love? Go, go get it!

Why do you do (why do you do) the things you do to yourself?
Why do you do the things you do?
Why do you do... (Why do you do it?)
Why do you do... (Why do you do it?)
Why do you do...
Why do you do the things you do?
